A LIMITED EDITION KIT & CREST FOR THE CITY OF LAKES
Minneapolis City Soccer Club is a semi-professional team competing in the National Premier Soccer League.
Founded in 2015, Mpls City SC began their inaugural season in the spring of 2016. The supporter-owned club is a non-profit, and will play it’s home matches at Les Barnard Field in South Minneapolis.
Having grown up in Minneapolis, I was really excited when the club asked me to design an alternate kit and crest for the team to wear during cup matches.
Though I now live elsewhere, Minneapolis will always be home. I’m glad I was able to make this contribution to the soccer community in my hometown.
I set out to design a non-traditional football crest, inspired by the old hand-painted logos and advertisements found faded throughout Minneapolis. The friendly, retro script typography honors the city’s lakes and the Mississippi River – which separates Minneapolis and St Paul.
The deep blue in the jersey honors the famous waters of Minneapolis. The 5 sock stripes represent the 5 lakes in the city’s Chain of Lakes (Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isles, Cedar Lake, and Brownie Lake). The number font is inspired by that of the Minnesota Kicks – an NASL team that played just outside Minneapolis in the 1970s. The back neck detail reads “City of Lakes” and the inner collar, “Minneapolis Made.”
